Home burglaries are on the rise when other property crimes are falling. Property crimes are slowly declining according to the FBI stats but burglaries are up .6% from 2004 to 2006. A home burglary happens every 15 seconds. Why so often?

1. Almost 33% of burglaries by unlawful entry thru an unlocked door or window.
2. Police tell us that 90% of all burglaries can be prevented.
3. 17% of all crime domiciles were violated by a burglar. That means on average that if you stay in your home for six years-on average- you will be burglarized.
4. 65-70% of all burglars and is made up of everything from bored neighborhood teens to drug addicts looking for some easy money to feed their habit. They are rank amateurs.
5. FBI statistics from 2004 show the value of goods stolen in burglaries to be on average about $1600.
Home security starts at the front door of your house or apartment. Almost all home invasions involve entry via the front door or back door. Knowing this is the first step to shoring up your defenses.
There are several things homeowners and apartment dwellers can do to slow down or flat out stop home burglaries and home invasions.
• Use your peephole-if you don't have one get one.
• Never just open your door-always make sure you know who is on the other side.
• Use a deadbolt lock-again if you don't have one get one.
• Have some self defense products available-in case there is an unlawful entry, be prepared to defend your turf and your family.
