Every spring, many companies hold their annual company picnic or barbecue. If you are among the lucky ones who enjoy their job and geniunely like the people you work with, then you probably look forward to this event.
For many of the rest of us, though, the company picnic is a day to be dreaded. Why is that? Considering that you already spend most of your waking life with your co-workers and supervisors, you may not want to start socializing with them, too. Couple that with the fact that these office parties are often quite awkward and stiff, because everyone is still worried about making a good impression on the boss.
If this sounds like you, why not try changing the tone at your next office function? Picnics are especially good for this, because oftentimes the boss will take a turn behind the barbecue, showing off his cooking skills (or lack thereof).
As soon as the date of your company picnic is announced, it's time to go into planning mode. Get together with a few of your co-workers, and plan to get your boss a new apron with a funny saying or cartoon on the front. They are fairly inexpensive, and a few of you can pitch in and get one. You can let everyone in the office know of your plan, and sign a card for the boss.
During the picnic, find an opportune moment to get everyone's attention and present the boss with the card and gift. Try to get him to open it then and there, in front of everyone. If you've done a good job selecting the apron, everyone should get a great laugh. (Just make sure not to get anything offensive or controversial!)
If all goes well, your boss will put on the apron right away, so everyone can see it. If you can get the boss to laugh at himself, and allow everyone else to join in, you may just be able to break the ice and lighten the mood of the day. Good luck at your next company picnic!
