If you are going to plant a water garden or upgrade the one you currently have, there are a few things that you have to understand before doing so. If you are starting a new water garden, you will want to find out the different varieties available. They can be started from scratch with all the materials you need to set it up or you can get a water garden kit.
The kits can be installed in your garden to achieve the look you wish to attain. If you want to add statues or fountains, there are lots of ready-made ones. A waterfall will look dazzling and your fish will love it too. Read the guidebook that came with your kit so that you can set it up smoothly. If you do it properly the first time, you will not have to pull it all up and start over because you made a mistake.
The plants you wish to plant in your water garden can either be submerged plants or floating plants. Submerged plants live practically entirely in the water with leaves that may grow above the water. Water lilies are a good example of this type of plant. Normally, they are planted in a container or at the bottom of the pond, around one or two feet below the level of the water. Water lilies also create oxygen for fish in the water. Another submerged plant that many people have is the hornwart.
If you want to add floating plants to your water garden, simply place them on the top of the water. A suitable plant that floats on water is the mosquito fern. These plants are fast growing plants. Their benefits include providing shade for keeping down algae. This is mostly what they are used for other than the beauty they provide for your water garden.
The cattails, elephant ears, iris and lotus are great for putting in your pond. They are added to the pond with their container just below the water level. The peacefulness that ponds give is worth the hard work to set one up.
The benefits of a pond are many if you look at it from a standpoint of having a place to spend time and feel relaxed. Watching fish swimming from one end to the other and talking with the visitors that will come to check out your water garden will be a pleasure.
If you are upgrading your water garden, consider all the various things you can add that will make it stand out. Waterfalls are a nice addition. The fish love them and if you light your pond with tiny lights, the effect is very lovely at night. Statues of your favorite nymphs, garden fairies or anything that you love are a great way to enhance your water garden and individualize it to your preferences.
The one bad thing about having a water garden is that they do attract unwelcomed visitors. The fish attract snakes, cats and raccoons. If you want a pond with koi or other pricey fish, you need to try to figure out a way to prevent these pests from eating your fish. Many people use goldfishes because they are economical and good. There are some very pretty species of goldfish that will enhance your water garden if you're on a tight budget.
