Whilst many medical doctors will say tight-fitting clothes do not technically pose physical concerns, most women who have been through the wonders of pregnancy will readily admit normal just doesn’t work at this time in life. The reason for this generally comes down to nothing more than comfort. The simple truth is regular clothing that is ill designed for pregnancy can cut into a belly, fail to support breasts and even press on sensitive areas to the point of distraction.
So, what’s a woman to do? Invest in maternity wear, of course!
Although it is very true that every woman will be somewhat different in the timing that new clothing is required and that this might even vary from pregnancy to pregnancy, most will find they do need new clothing.
The typical purchases that can help make pregnancy more comfortable include:
• Maternity and/or nursing bras. The first noticeable changes that take place during pregnancy almost always involve the breasts. As they enlarge to accommodate milk glands, a woman is very likely to notice existing bras simply do not provide proper support or comfort. It is typically wise to go a little easy on the initial purchases – breasts can increase by several cup sizes during some pregnancies. In fact, a 440-cc growth per breast is considered average!
• Blouses. Just about the time the breasts demand larger accommodations, a need for larger blouses is likely to present itself. When this happens, it is an excellent time to purchase maternity wear. Many purchases can be made that will last the duration of the nine months. Have fun shopping for these – maternity blouses are not the frumpy frocks of the past. Some of today’s creations are so beautiful, many women have trouble putting them away after baby arrives!
• Slacks. Surprisingly enough, these are generally the last wardrobe adjustments many women need to make. When regular clothes start to feel uncomfortable, however, it’s probably time to invest. Pregnancy slacks with stretch front panels can be purchased fairly early on and last throughout most pregnancies. As long as clothing size does not jump tremendously, purchases made in the third month will likely carry through until delivery.
• Shoes and socks. It’s an odd fact of pregnancy that foot size can increase. Sometimes this is due to weight gain, but in others it involves water retention. In any event, if shoes and socks are not comfortable, you won’t be either! Do consider lower heels and slightly roomier sizes.
Pregnancy delivers a host of miraculous changes. When it comes to clothing, chances are a woman will quickly discover that regular just won’t do when a baby’s on the way.
