If you have landed on this article, or this website, then clearly you are taking the first steps in researching a home based business. The reasons that people are interested are diverse. Maybe you don’t like your 9 to 5. Maybe you were laid off from a good job. Perhaps you just want to be able to spend more time with your family, or provide them with a better future by creating more income for yourself. You could possibly be a stay at home mom (70% of people looking for a home based business are you, ladies!) or a retiree or a recent college grad having trouble finding the great opportunity that you thought 4 to 6 years of education would get you. With the housing market being what it is, there is a good chance the money you were making or hoping to make in the real estate or mortgage business has complexly dried up. These are all great reasons to be here (and all common by the way). There is a good chance, however, that you will not take one single step past research. This is common. You’ll visit a bunch of websites that make all kinds of promises in regards to opportunity and income. Some of them will appeal to you quite a bit, but at the end of the day you will not actually do anything to pursue it. You will go back to your job and spend your time daydreaming about these opportunities and what you could do with extra time or extra income. As someone who took the leap, I can tell you that in many cases that is a mistake!! The number one reason to not go forward is fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of doing something different. For different people, their fear may stem from different sources. What if this is a scam? Six figures from home, it must be too good to be true! What will my friends think? What about my current job? What will I do for income if this does not succeed? I don’t know anything about working online, will I get the proper training? I would like to take the opportunity to address some of these right now, because I see the same hesitations nearly every day.
• First off, what if the opportunity I am researching is a scam? Unfortunately, there are a lot of scams out there and they do not have a disclaimer on their website that says “bad opportunity, don’t sign up today!” Luckily, these do not last very long and there are less than you think. It is in people’s nature to be pessimistic and doubt everything to prevent someone pulling a fast one on them. People will find one reason to not pursue an opportunity even if there are 100 reasons to go forward. Simply put, do your research. Find out what you can about the CEO of the company, the pay and the products. There are independent reviews out there. If a company has ripped someone off, they will complain and you will find it. A word to the wise, always get both sides of the story.
• Six figures from home, that must be too good to be true! And for many people it is. Many online opportunities do not even boast of this type of income. If you are looking for steady, low paying opportunities in things like data entry or licking envelopes, they are certainly available online. On the flip side, websites that do claim this type of income can oftentimes back it up. There is a lot of money to be made online. Don’t ever underestimate that. Just because you may not personally know someone that is making this type of income, does not mean that people don’t do it everyday. If you do not associate with people that make that kind of money and you would like to, then maybe you need to re-evaluate your social circle.
• What will my friends think? What about my spouse? I can answer that right now. Most of them will be hesitant. They will tell you that you are making a bad decision. This is because they don’t want to see you get hurt, either by a scam, or not being successful. This is where you need to have a little belief in yourself that you are a talented individual and that you will be successful. Once your friends and family see that success, they will gravitate to it, and you. Trust me. And Im sure your spouse won’t complain about the extra income either.
• What about my current job? Well, if it was that great, what are you doing reading this? You obviously aspire to something better. Id like to say that I cannot understand why someone would stay in a bad situation or a dead end job, trying to make ends meet when there are better opportunities readily available, but I was guilty of that myself. I went 2 years of hating my job (2 years I wont get back) before I made the switch. I justified it by thinking things would get better, and that I was making good money, but in the end it was not worth the stress and the damage to my quality of life.
• What will I do for income if this does not succeed? A great piece of advice that I got was to never have a Plan B, because Plan A will never work. The point being, if you are already prepared with a “fall-back” option, then your chances of succeeding decrease dramatically. Six-figure incomes and millionaires are not made overnight, even online. Be prepared to learn and work and you will be successful. Over time, that success increases exponentially.
• I don’t know anything about working online, will I receive the proper training? I was surprised to find that this was the most common question that I receive. I thought all anyone would ask about is the money. Here is my response. Get a good mentor! When you start an online business, you will be at the mercy of your mentor (the man or woman who signs you up) for a time until you learn the tricks of the trade and become self-sufficient. Be sure to partner up with someone you are comfortable with and can trust. This is no different than when you interview for a job. If you think the boss is a jerk and does not care about you, do you want to work at that office? Me neither. Personally speaking, I had little to no experience marketing online. What was lucky for me was that I started with a great company that provided me with all the tools I needed to succeed. It was probably even enough to succeed without my mentor, who was great as well.
I hope this helps to address some of the fears or anxieties you may have had in regards to starting an online business. Maybe it is not for everyone. For me, it has been wonderful. I only wish I had gotten off the fence a little sooner. My final piece of advice is this:
If you are not happy with your current situation, financially or emotionally, then take a step and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Nothing is going to just happen, it starts with you. If you are going to begin your future with an online business, stop waiting and GET STARTED. I can tell you it will be a weight lifted from your shoulders.
Feedback is always welcome.
