Let me tell you about my neighbor. She's a very considerate, caring individual. She's the first one to offer assistance whenever needed. She volunteers at the local hospital, cuddling and rocking sick infants or sitting at the bedside of the elderly. She provides meals to shut-ins and visits the lonely. She arranges transportation to medical appointments for those who should not drive themselves and runs errands for others who cannot do so themselves. She is certainly one remarkable lady.
What characterizes and differentiates her from other good-hearted persons is her reason for doing so. You see, life has not been easy for her. She lost her loving husband in World War II, leaving her to raise an infant son alone. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, she made the best of things for herself and her son. Her mantra is, "Helping others is my blessing in life...I need to be needed!"
This wonderful woman has had a tough year of loss. Several of her loved ones have passed away. She lost her sister, her dog, and even her son all within a few short months of each other. In spite of her sorrow, she continues to devote her life to helping others unselfishly.
This Memorial Day will be particularly difficult for her so I would like to let her know I'm thinking of her by giving her a little gift. I thought about giving her a gift certificate to her favorite restaurant. She enjoys eating out with friends, and does so quite often. She would really appreciate this gift.
A box of stationery would also be a good gift for her because she enjoys corresponding with friends who live far away. In fact, she even has a pen pal in England. This relationship developed shortly after World War II ended and her pen pal lost her husband in the war, as well. They have actually visited with each other in person a couple of times over the years. She would certainly enjoy writing letters on new stationery.
All things considered, I decided to give her a beautiful basket of delicious fruit. She would be able to enjoy a healthy snack while traveling to and from her many activities and appointments. Juicy, ripe fruit would give her the energy she needs to maintain her active lifestyle. She could even share the fruit with others, as her mood strikes.
I'm happy to remember my favorite neighbor this Memorial Day. Our neighborhood just wouldn't be the same without her. We've all learned to be good neighbors by following her example. Giving her a Fruit Basket as a token of our appreciation for her and to honor the memory of her loved ones is a gift she will appreciate and enjoy.
