The daffodils are out, it’s lighter in the evening, and the birds are singing; all signs that spring has finally arrived and with it the need to sweep winter from the house.
Spring cleaning is a tradition that allows us to spruce up our home and at the same time give us a fresher outlook on the milder time ahead. Now is the time to sort things that have bugged you all winter; time to throw stuff out, change things around and give your home a lovely fresh look and feel.
Begin your spring clean upstairs, because chances are that’s been cleaned less during the winter. Clean away cobwebs from the corners of the ceiling and at this point you might want to examine whether the upstairs walls are covered in little greasy marks and in need of washing. It is not vital, but chances are if you have small children you might want to consider it to give a fresh look to the walls, especially the bottom third!
Next, it's into the bedrooms to give a brighter look to our most restful rooms. Take down curtains and wash them, or have them dried and cleaned according to instructions. If you have blinds instead, you may want to wash them with a little soapy water to give them a nearly-new look. Also, thoroughly wash the inside of the windows, including the frames. Any grubby bedroom carpets could probably do with a shampoo, or at least a severe vacuuming.
Also, remember to sort out the
beds; our grandparents used to hang the mattresses over the washing line and give them a good beating. We no longer have to be that extreme as modern-day mattresses are better built, but certainly flipping the mattress over will help re-adjust it and give a more even distribution. But, before putting it back on the bed give the bed frame a thorough clean.
Speaking of frames, remember to clean your bedroom pictures at the same time. It is important though when cleaning pictures to avoid spraying the frames, as the liquid can seep behind the glass and ruin the picture. Instead, wet a clean cloth and gently wipe both the frame and glass.
While cleaning your bedrooms you might want to consider a sojourn into the bathroom, where a fair amount of elbow grease will be required. Here tasks will include removing mildew or applying a preventative, thoroughly washing down the tiles and of course, disinfecting the shower, bath, toilet and sink bowls.
And, now you can start spring cleaning downstairs......
