Losing your hair can be embarrassing for anyone. But for women it can be a real issue. Female hair loss usually takes a different form to men. It appears as a diffuse thinning of the hair rather than bald patches. Here are some of the causes of hair loss in women.
Stress related
We all lead increasingly stressful lives and this can have an effect on the hair. This could be from the stress of coping with work and family commitments or coping with the tragic loss of a loved. The term for this type of hair loss is telogen effluvium. You may only notice the effects of hairloss 1-3 months after the causal event.
Thyroid
The thyroid gland is situated in the throat and releases hormones essential for the maintenance of good health. Both an underactive and an overactive thyroid can lead to problems with hair loss. Treatment of these conditions is now possible with drug therapy.
Menopause
The menopause is a time of physical, hormonal, and emotional change. It is believed that the change in hormones is one of the reasons for the reports of hairloss in women at this age. Some estimate that the number of women that suffer hairloss at this time in their lives is as high as 50%
Childbirth
Losing your hair at this time is known as post-partum hair loss. It is common and often occurs 1-3 months after giving birth. It does usually resolve itself after 6-12 months. The reason is that birth is a stressful event to the body and there is also a dramatic change in hormone levels.
Cancer treatment
Chemotherapy can cause all of the hair to fall out soon after treatment, usually about 1-2 weeks. After treatment has been completed it usually grows back but it maybe slightly different for example it maybe a slightly different color or more curly.
Radiotherapy causes more localized hair loss in the area of treatment. For instance treatment of a brain tumor may cause a patch of hairloss just in the treated area of the head.
