"Sometimes the snow comes down in June

Sometimes the sun goes round the moon"

Those lines emanate from a song released by Vanessa Williams in 1992, and originally preformed by the band "Me First and the Gimme Gimme's." They are part of a song entitled Save the Best for Last. Some might agree that single song title about the best savings is a great way to enjoy life, while others might argue that it promotes the evil of procrastination. Being the student that always waited until the last night to finish the final project or write the research paper, dessert always manages to hang around a plate a little longer than the main entree at my dinner table. My preference was always to preserve that extra special stuff for the last half mile, the fourth quarter or the goodnight kiss. Of course, I always was a slow runner, sat the bench quite a bit in crunch time and try not to kiss on the first date. As it turns out, people in general don't necessarily seem to have quite as bit a fascination with saving the best for last, but instead just saving in general. It seems like more and more these days, people are joining churches and getting themselves saved. At the end of our favorite movies, the protagonist often proclaims "Save yourself!" One of the founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, even taught a penny saved is a penny earned. And do not forget the ever popular Baywatch, a show all about saving people. Clearly, there exists an obsession with the best savings. As we explore the types of this secret obsession in each of us, we'll let Vanessa's beautifully sung lyrics help us explore the reasons why.

"But now we're standing face to face

Isn't this world a crazy place"

The most extreme type of saving would probably be classified under the obsessive compulsive disorder more commonly known as "hoarding." It's an unfortunate mindset that prevents people from ridding themselves of absolutely anything. Although the reasons can vary significantly, the main cause for this repeated action is for fear that they may at some point need the item, possibly because they have assigned some imaginary value to the item that can not be concluded as financial, functional, or emotional. This disorder debilitates to the points that it can destroy personal relationships, affect ability to perform in the workplace, or even attempts to advance education due to the large portion of the psyche that this infirmity can divert. As the couplet might suggest, the world seems extremely cluttered and crazy wherever someone afflicted with "hoarding" finds themselves.

"There was a time when all I did was wish

It's not the way I hoped or how I planned

But somehow it's enough"

Not all kinds of saving are necessarily unhealthy, however. One of the largest hobbies in the United States today is the hobby of collecting. Everything from vintage clothes to bobble heads dots the collectibles landscape. In my own life my collections include comic books, sports cards and now logo golf balls from the courses played. Whether it be post cards, commemorative plates, stamps or coins, almost everyone collects something they can call their own. This kind of saving is much healthier and in many cases productive as the collections grow in value as they are an investment of not just time and energy, but also of value both calculated and sentimental. Such as the photo albums your mother put together, or the action figures from 1985. While those may be the most truly precious savings, it seems almost everyone, without exception, yearns for a different kind of the best savings.

"Sometimes of everything you're looking for

It's the one thing you can't see"

Champion of all the saving obsessions known to man, saving money seems to be the top fascination. It's why there are free refills on the large popcorn at the movie theatre, even though no one can even stomach half of a bag. That is the same reason why places that sell in bulk like Sam's Club are so successful. Although someone might spend more there, the perception is of saving in the long run. Many times, people will buy things they don't need simply because it is a good deal. They feel they have nothing to lose in such a bargain. This is precisely how what we consider the best savings translates into the best profits for these types of companies.

So maybe you know it doesn't really snow in June, except in Alaska. And clearly you know the sun revolves around the moon about as much as the Earth is flat. However, when it comes to the best savings possible:

"You went and saved the best for last"
