Writing can be a rewarding career, but becoming a novelist is no easy task. It took me four years to write my first novel, and it took another two years to get it published. I still haven't made enough money from that book to become a writer full-time. The average salary for a novelist is only $10,000 per year. That may have been the big time in 1920, but it's not 1920 any longer and the cost of living has increased dramatically.

There are other ways that I have found to make money in the field of writing other than just writing a book. Freelance writing is one oppourtunity. You can pitch and idea to a magazine and often times, if the magazine likes the idea, it will pay a writer's expenses for the project. The "Writer's Market Deluxe" has a vast selection of magazines, which do accept articles written by freelance writers.

Another way to make money is by writing short-stories and submitting them to magazines. I have done this many times. The pay rate is different for each magazine. Some pay a flat-rate (one-time payment), while others pay-per-word. The pay-per-word magazines are a better way to go than flat-rate ones.

There are also numerous story/poetry contests that happen all throughout the year in every state. For example, there is one called the "Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition" which takes place in July. The top prize is $1000, for just one story. Another one, which takes place in November and also has a prize of $1000, is the "Goldenberg Prize for Fiction."
