As the economy slows down, more people are looking for ways to earn money online. There are numerous benefits to home employment, especially with the price of gasoline approaching $3.50 per gallon. Although there are many different ways to earn money on the Internet, one of the simplest ways to do so is through affiliate marketing.

In affiliate marketing, an individual joins a profit sharing program offered by a business to help promote that company's goods or services. If a customer purchases the product using a link provided by the individual, the affiliate gets a portion of the sales price as a commission. The individual, called an affiliate, can help promote the company's products in a number of ways, including direct mail, blogging, a product review Website or through pay per click advertising.

How can someone get started in affiliate marketing? You might like to seek out the Warrior Forum, a site devoted to helping people earn money online. A number of books have been written on online marketing, and a lot of documentation is accessible for free on the Web. Otherwise, a Google search on the topic will likely return enough results to keep any reader busy for quite a while.

While everyone who works as an affiliate has their own methods of making sales, many people work in the following way:

Pick a product. There are literally thousands of companies online that have affiliate programs. Amazon, eBay and Clickbank all have worthwhile programs that are easy to join, as do many other large companies such as Dell. You may have more success if you stick to products that interest you or products that you know something about. The market is competitive, so the more you know about the items you are promoting the greater your success will be.

Create a small Website or blog. Search engines particularly like blogs, and sometimes update their index several times a day with blog updates. A Website or blog are ideal for promoting products of all types. A Website or blog that reviews a variety of products in a certain market niche and recommends those that are particularly good or useful are often successful.

Advertise the Website so that buyers can find it. There are a number of free or affordable ways to advertise a Website. You can write articles about your topic and submit them to article Websites. Each article may contain a "bio box" that contains a link to your Website. You could try buying some search engine traffic through pay per click ads on Yahoo!, Google, or MSN. You might consider joining a forum that is dedicated to your area of interest. A simple Google search for "name-of-topic forum" will likely turn up several of them.

Affiliate marketing is not necessarily a source of easy money, but thousands of people earn money every day using the methods described above. The methods are fairly easy to learn, don't require a lot of time, and don't cost a lot of cash. In a difficult economy, those are definite benefits.
