When you go to buy something for the home, such as a new washing machine, how do you know that you're getting a reasonable deal? You probably spend a little time comparing prices, just to make sure that you're not paying over the odds.

Now turn your attention to the way in which you purchase car warranty policies. If you're buying habits are like much of the population, then purchasing such a policy probably involves visiting a car dealership.

Once you get there, you'll most probably speak to a sales person. They will then try to sell you one policy or another. They will frequently get paid a commission for generating more sales of this nature.

Having listened to their sales pitch, you'll then make your purchase.

If this sounds familiar to you, then consider a few factors.

In purchasing in this way, you will not have considered any alternative products, other than those sold by the car retailer. Since you've not considered any other products, you'll be in no position to identify whether you are being offered a good deal.

This is because you have nothing to compare it to. You'll have no idea whether it offers a good standard of cover compared to other policies, or whether it is being sold at a reasonable price.

In effect, you are making your purchase without any knowledge. When you think about it this way, this whole method of buying policies is pretty crazy.

Wouldn't a more sensible approach be to look up a few warranty companies online? What you could then do would be to get some free quotes on a variey of policies. This way, you'll build up knowledge on how the market looks and what constitutes a good price.

You may even find that the cheapest car warranty is to be found online, in which case you can make a purchase without even leaving your home.

Make sure that you've got enough knowledge before making any such purchases.
