Anne Rice introduced the world to her vampires in the Vampire Chronicles. They maintained the no sunlight and blood drinking cliche. However, they could look at crosses and garlic did not affect them. They were night walkers and charismatic. Lestat and Louis were at odds on what a vampire should be like. They spent money wildly and lived lavishly.
Isabella Medici put a twist to the undead concept. In her novel Mephestopheles, vampires were not vampires. There was the living world and the world of Asilem, which is ruled by the immortals. However, Medici's immortals could walk in daylight and didn't have the vampire teeth, nor did they drink blood. Much like Rice's they lived lavishly. Like Lestat and Louis were at odds, Belakot and Mephestopheles were at odds. Luthierre played the role of the clueless immortal.
So what is a vampire? I guess it depends who you ask. Vampires have been around prior to the 19th century and the folklore is still strong in Romania and the bordering countries. In fact, Dracula was published in 1897. Go ahead and read Rice and Medici and decide which type of immortal you prefer, but remember one can't get you during the day.
