But this is only the backdrop to the main attraction, the Floating Village. This village is an extraordinary sight to behold as everything in the village floats on the surface of the water including households, markets, clinics, the school house and even the Christian Church. All the structures in the village can be raised to about 4 meters in height due to the changing water levels during the different seasons in Cambodia. Other unique features include towering stilted houses and huge fish traps.
Boat tours are available that allow for quick and easy look at the Tonle Sap Lake. These boat tours are available all day long. A 2 hour boat trip through the floating village costs around $6 and may carry as many as 15 other passengers. These boat trips usually include two stops, the Fish and Bird exhibition as well as the Gecko Environment centre. The Environment Centre offers displays and information about the local eco-system.
For visitors who stay in a Siem Reap hotel the lake only sits 15km away from them which provides easy and convenient access. There is also a range of other Cambodia Hotels that offer convenient access to the Floating Village. Whatever the hotel, visitors can take a motodup or taxi to reach the boat tours.
