Central Texas School District Profile: Georgetown ISD

Georgetown Independent School District’s motto, “Today’s Learners, Tomorrow’s Leaders”, reflects the community’s commitment to providing quality education within excellent schools. GISD is committed to developing life-long learners and leaders. Strong community support and parental involvement are key to the success of GISD’s schools and students.

With an enrollment of 9,990, GISD serves a diverse population of students in grades PK-12. The diversity of GISD is reflected in its demographic makeup, which includes 4.1% African-American, 31.5% Hispanic, 62.9% White, .7% Native American, and .9% Asian students. GISD serves a 36.3% population of economically disadvantaged students and 9.3% with English as a second language.

GISD consists of fifteen campuses, nine on the elementary level, three middle schools, a ninth grade campus, one high school and an alternative high school campus. GISD was rated as Academically Acceptable on the Texas Education Agency Academic Excellence Indicator System for 2007. Ford Elementary and Village Elementary received Exemplary ratings. Only eight percent of the schools in Texas qualified for this rating.

Schools receiving Recognized ratings for 2007 included Benold Middle, Forbes Middle, Tippit Middle, and Cooper Elementary. Pickett Elementary and Benold Middle School received Gold Performance Schools awards from TEA. Gold Performance awards recognize schools that achieve high levels of performance in areas critical to the academic success of their students.

The Texas Business and Education Coalition (TBEC) named three GISD schools, Village Elementary, Pickett Elementary, and the Ninth Grade Campus, to their Honor Roll. The TBEC Honor Roll recognizes schools that meet high academic standards for three consecutive years. Less than five percent of the schools in Texas qualify for this distinction.

In December 2007, Texas Monthly magazine named two GISD schools, Forbes and Tippit Middle Schools to its list of High Performing Public Schools.

The city of Georgetown is located twenty-six miles north of Austin. Georgetown is a rapidly growing city that maintains its small town charm while providing easy access to the big city amenities of Austin.
