Visitors to York are now able to access new digital tour guide of the city.
A recorded voice takes the listener through the history of York and its buildings.
The digital tour starts at the Castle Museum explaining the horrid history of Clifford’s Tower.
Visitors are then introduced to the Georgian-era Fairfax House and the recently discovered 300-year old Chinese shopping list that was unearthed in an 18th-century vase.
The final part of the tour takes the viewer onto the streets of York and explains the name of streets such as the Shambles.
In addition the tour also takes a look at York’s most famous building the York Minister.
The York Tourism Bureau said, “On the back of winning the European Tourism City of the Year I’m not surprised that this company has decided to choose York for its new audio tour alongside cities like Florence and Vienna.
“We would be supportive and we hope that will encourage people to do more and see more when they are here.”
The City of York was recently included in the set of new digital tour guides, which also included major European capital cities.
The owner of mp3cityguides.com who produce the audio guides said, customers were frequently asking for information on York.
“ York was one of the cities that our site visitors were most keen to see us do, and I’m particularly proud of it because we’ve introduced sound effects and new music for the first time – they really help create the right atmosphere.
“We’ve also added a new category in our printed guide called Highly Recommended for those restaurants, shops and cafes which we rate particularly highly.”
The guides are available to download straight onto MP3 players and already include the cities
Amsterdam, Barcelona, London and Rome.
