Useful Tips for Effective Rug Cleaning

So you want to clean your rug. To achieve better results when carpet rug cleaning, you are welcome to use the following tips. For large rugs, it’s recommended you get them professionally cleaned every twelve months.

Cleaning Small Rugs
You should not have any problems cleaning your small rugs. Do the following:
  • Vacuum your rug thoroughly.

  • Use a mild liquid soap or rug shampoo and cool water to shampoo your rug. Brush the pile in a linear motion with either a non-shedding sponge or soft, long-haired brush.

  • Saturate the nap with your cleaning solution.

  • Clean your fringes.

  • Rinse your rug thoroughly.

  • Squeeze out extra water from the rug.

  • Lay your rug on a flat surface. When your nap is dry, then flip your rug over and let the back dry.

  • Your rug might feel stiff. If so, gently vacuum or brush your rug.

Oops! Those Pet Mistakes
Your cat may not have meant to use your rug as its litter box. But unfortunately, accidents happen. Other than having your rug professionally cleaned, you can clean it yourself. You can either use a rug shampoo or make your own cleaning solution. Mix the following ingredients to make your solution:

  • Pour ¼ cup of white vinegar into a bucket

  • Pour ½ teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent

  • Pour 2 cups of lukewarm water

Dyes on most Oriental rugs are acid-fast. When you combine white vinegar with water, it becomes more acidic. As a result, this strengthens the bond between the rug’s wool and dyestuff, which avoids colors from running.

Now you are ready to tackle that stain. Follow the steps below:

  • Use paper towels or a clean, white cloth to get up as much of the excrement as possible. Better yet, you may want to use a tablespoon or spatula to scrape up the excrement.

  • Blot the area dry. Saturate your sponge with your solution or rug shampoo. Then gently scrub the nap a few times. Make sure you scrub it in the direction of the nap.

  • Use cool and clean water to rinse the area.

  • Use either a non-shedding sponge or towel to soak up excess water.

  • Let the rug dry.

  • If your rug feels stiff, use a soft brush for your rug.

Getting Rid of Pet Urine
Take care of the problem immediately. Use paper towels or a clean, white cloth to blot up as much urine as possible. Then take your rug outside. Use a hose to spray cool water directly on the area. (Note: You don’t want to get the whole rug wet.) Mix approximately one cup of white vinegar per gallon with the rinse water. Vinegar is effective in that it helps to:

  • Counteract the odor

  • Stop the rug’s colors from running

Rug Maintenance
One thing you should do when it comes to rug cleaning and maintenance is rotating it. You should rotate your rug once a year so that it gets equal amount of consistent traffic, light, and wear.
