Having been involved with online dating since...since it began, I believe it is up to the online daters to make online dating safe! I really do not feel it is the responsibility of the online dating sites. They are only providing a service. The rest is up to us...

One way to make online dating safe; do not be so quick to give out your personal information.

That includes: your full name, full address, where you work, where your children attend school, exactly what you drive, etc.

This is how they casually obtain this information:

“I have more pictures I would like to send you but my scanner is broke. What is your full name and address? I will drop them in the mail today!” (You would feel stupid getting a P.O. Box!)

“I have a sister that is relocating to your city. Can you recommend the best schools?”
(Of course you are proud to share the best schools! Why it is the ones your children attend!)

“Since you work in Silicon Valley, do you keep up with the financial worth of the companies? The reason I am asking is I’m trying my hand at the stock market. Tell me the name of your company and I can let you know how well you are or are not doing.”
(You would love to know the financial stability of the company you work for! You hate financial surprises!)

“If you are ever in need of a car, I know someone in your area that can help you buy a car below dealer costs.” (Your answer will either be; “I have a 2004 Camero that I plan to keep forever!”
Or; “That would be great! I have been driving this 1995 Cutlass for 10 yrs and it is living on borrowed time!”

Okay...so, if you happen to be dealing with a crazy, criminal, stalker; you have given him the entire “map” of you and your world!

If he is a stalker, he now knows where you work and what you drive. It would be real easy to follow you home, to family or friends.

If they are a pedophile, they know exactly where your children attend school.

Please do not be flattered when an online stranger is asking about you and your life. There may be ulterior motives!

Online, we must take be responsible for making online dating safe. For ourselves and for others!
