See more with motoring holidays around Europe

One way to get more out of your holiday is by driving. There is so much to see and do in Europe and you can spend your time driving through the picturesque countries of France, Spain, Italy and many more. Sometimes when you are on holiday you just want to spend more time in a certain place and taking your car abroad allows you to spend more time in the places you want. The question is how do you get there?

Travelling by ferry

The ferry is a fun and exciting way to travel with your car. With 23 UK ports to travel to France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Norway and Sweden, there are plenty of options for customers. The journey takes longer than flying but is often cheaper and also offers a different kind of travel experience because you can take in the fresh air of the open sea as you head for your holiday destination as well as being amused by the onboard entertainment.

Before you go- DO NOT FORGET
`
You need to take your drivers’ license with you (of course!), the car insurance certificate, your passport and the original documentation for the vehicle. Remember everyone drives on the right hand side in Europe, it might be a bit strange at first but you will get used to it. You need to make sure you have all your documentation up to date and ready for inspection to make sure you avoid any police fines.

Stick to a plan

The good thing about Europe is that most countries are connected to each other which make visiting various European countries very easy as you can simply drive across the border. If you plan a route that you want to take, you will get the most out of your holiday as you should not have to backtrack because you missed something or somewhere you wanted to see.

When you arrive in one of the many ports in Europe you can begin your journey. If you are looking for some history and picturesque cities then the North of Spain is a good place to start. Pamplona, where the running of the bulls takes place, is a great city to visit, as are Santander, San Sebastian, and Oviedo. Carrying on along the north coast you can travel into the South of France, Biarritz is in the Basque country and is definitely worth a visit as the mix of cultures is a great background to a fascinating city.

As well as Spain and France, there are other countries such as Italy, where you can drive along the amazing Alps or driving along the mesmerising Eiffel Tower. Whatever you like to see and do, you can find it in Europe and driving really does allow you to see everything at your own pace.

Hints and tips on driving in Europe

Drivers in Europe tend to be a little bit more aggressive than ourselves in the UK but they are safe drivers. It may take you by surprise if you have not driven in Europe before but I assure you, it is safe. Speeding limits are similar but not the same as the UK and vary from country to country so double check before you leave. Make sure your travel insurance covers you for driving abroad as the fines are heavy.
