With their controversial, creative and innovative style, the Stone Temple Pilots truly symbolize what it means to be rock stars. The band first formed in San Diego in 1987 under the name Mighty Joe Young. They would go on to change their name to Stone Temple Pilots in the early nineties before releasing their breakthrough album, Core.
Core was STP’s first hit in the mainstream music scene and gained them not only attention among fans, but critical acclaim and impressive album sales as well. Core featured a slew of hits, which would define the band, including Sex Type Thing, Plush, Wicked Garden and Creep. STP followed Core with 1994’s Purple, an album which would eventually become number one on the pop charts. Purple diversified the group’s style and gained them further respect from both the rock and pop communities, with hits like Vasoline and Interstate Love Song.
Despite a steady stream of success throughout the 1990’s, with several more hit albums and numerous singles, the band would break up in 2003 due to personal differences. The breakup, caused by tension within STP, led to lead singer Scott Weiland forming Velvet Revolver with members of Guns N’ Roses and the rest of the band joining Richard Patrick of Filter to form Army of Anyone.
While both Weiland and his former band-mates achieved moderate success in their respective outside projects, in 2008, news broke that the Stone Temple Pilots are to reunite for a new album and reunion tour, lasting from May to November, 2008. The tour, which will play in various Canadian and American venues, is anticipated to be one of the biggest, best and highest grossing of the year.
As part of the tour, the Stone Temple Pilots are scheduled to headline Foxfest in Vancouver. Foxfest, a massive festival run by local Vancouver radio station 99.3 The Fox, is set to take place in General Motors Place on August 30, 2008. Foxfest will be the last of five total Canadian stops on STP’s North American reunion tour.
