If you look back at the websites of 90s you would probably give a cold look. These were the websites that looked as if they were left over.

Just try to remember those days when every website looked the same having a Netscape icon on it, not only this almost every site was hosted by Tripod and Geocities and Google was then just another hilarious word in the small world of internet.

1990s were the time when people thought web search meant nothing but tons of pages that load in, they actually never thought of those first 3 search results. It was the time when the World Wide Web started to arose and people’s expectations were very high for future while the present was really worse.

Nobody likes it when someone says that your website looks as if it were made in the early 90s, that's no where a compliment because the websites created in the 90's had loud dark colors, crazy pop-ups here and there, it looked really unprofessional.

Why do you think those websites were so bad? Is it because lack of money? Or is it due to the lack of knowledge?

Yes it is due to the lack of "Knowledge". Many people at that time knew how to build a good looking website, but never did...

They found difficulty only because they did not have proper software to make templates and designs. They always used codes using FrontPage and notepads.

Splash Pages

Around 1998, all the websites had discovered Flash, the only easy to use software that allowed animation of images and words on a website. This flash presentation was used by every websites and people just got bored of watching the thirty seconds of a logo revolving, sliding or bouncing of words across the screen.

Flash "splash pages," as it was called before became very popular. Everyone loved to display Flash on their personal homepage, but they hated to sit and watch someone else's Flash presentation.

Another problem or a similarity that every home page had is "welcome note". Every site had the same "Welcome To My Homepage" title. They never said what their website is all about but they just said "Welcome". As these welcome notes were similar even the images and background were similar. Everybody used their kids photo in the background which did not look professional at all.

Some examples of the worst sites were the one that had only images but no text. They gave their services and products only by displaying images. And some had only videos, flash images and text's floating all over the website saying nothing but disturbing your eye's... Ah Pathetic!

Now of course there are some sites that look very professional and pleasing to eyes. Thanks to great graphic designers.
