Online traffic school is a relatively recent innovation in the world of defensive driving. Where once a student was required to locate an approved school, determine their schedule and availability, and drive to the location chosen by the instructor, now students simply need to log on and find the course that is right for them without ever leaving their home. One such provider of online driving courses is National Driver Safety Services. They are one example of the kind of online traffic schools that you can now find by doing a simple web search.

One of the primary benefits of an online traffic school is the ability to set your own schedule. These days, people are busier than ever, and they may not have a day to set aside at someone else’s convenience in order to satisfy a court requirement. It is far handier to be able to simply log on to a web site from any computer that has an Internet connection and begin, continue, or finish a course that has been assigned to you without worrying about locating a classroom or downloading software.

When a student elects to take this sort of course online, the first thing they need to do is verify with their court that the program is permitted to be used in their area as proof of having taken traffic school. In many states, online programs have been approved statewide for use by violators, but in some cases the decision is made on a court-by-court basis. There are even locations in which a traffic school course must be taken in a traditional classroom, usually because the laws were written at a time before the world wide web and have not yet caught up with technology. Nonetheless, it is extremely important for the student to check before he or she registers so as not to waste his or her time taking a class twice.

Once a student has gotten approval to work online, providers such as National Driver Safety Services and others, such as I DRIVE SAFELY, are available to process payment online, and in many cases the student does not need to leave the house even for the final exam, though this can vary by state and court. The certificate of completion is generally delivered via U.S. mail or overnight courier service to the student’s home, and then he or she takes it to the court as proof of completion. The certificate may be used for one of several court purposes, including dismissing a ticket, reducing points on a license, or simply to satisfy the requirement of taking a defensive driving course if ordered to do so by a judge. This newer way of taking traffic school is one way technology has given us all a convenient solution to a time-consuming chore.

For additional information about the state regulations regarding online traffic schools, please contact your state department of transportation. Most have the answers you seek on their home pages or are a quick phone call away.
