If you are going on holiday the common thing to do is to send a postcard home to tell people where you are staying, what you are doing and what a good time you’re having. But if you do that you are restricted to the postcards you can find of that area, and it can also take a long time for them to get through the postal system and arrive at the homes of the people you have sent them to. In fact, it’s not unusual for you to arrive back home before your postcards do!

But if you have your pocket PC or laptop with you then you have access to an altogether more personal version of the holiday postcard.

Webcams have made it possible to speak to people face to face and, while they were initially thought of as being a great new way to hold a conference call for modern businesses, they have other uses as well which are starting to be tapped into.

For example, no one used to think about taking their computer abroad with them, but the fact that they are now much smaller and easier to carry around has meant that many more people do just that. So long as you have a compact laptop or pocket PC it isn’t a challenge to take it abroad with you. Webcams aren’t exactly hard or heavy to carry either.

So just imagine stretching out on the balcony of your holiday apartment, setting up your laptop and webcam and phoning home to show people what you are up to. It’s a much more personal way of showing your family where you are staying and what the weather’s like, and you can also chat with them as well. If the local bar isn’t very enticing what could be better than chatting to your family while you are relaxing and watching the sun go down in another country?

As you can see, a free video call has many benefits over a postcard. Instead of trying to fit everything you want to say in just a few inches of space, you can chat for hours if you want to. No stamps, no fuss, and no delay in your message getting through. It’s all quick, easy and completely free.

While it’s good to use this option while you are on holiday, it will come in especially handy if you are travelling for any length of time. Instead of being restricted to a call home every week because of the cost, you can hop online every night and talk to the people you care about the most.

What could possibly be better than that?
