The American society took its first step toward dependence on tap water filtration systems back in the 1890s. At that time, cities wanted to do-away with the chances that city residents might develop cholera or typhoid. Today, scientists are discovering the degree to which daily exposure to chlorine can damage the body system. Scientists applaud the creation of tap water filtration systems. By using such systems, urban dwellers can enjoy water that is free of both harmful organisms and chlorine.

In Los Angeles, addition of an acceptable amount of chorine to the tap water was not able to guarantee the killing of all the micro-organisms in the water. The authorities in Los Angeles therefore chose to supplement that chlorine with chloramine.

Every March, Iranians in Los Angeles, those who want to celebrate the Persian New Year, learn the sad effect of adding chloramine to water. Unless those Iranians have and use tap water filtration systems, they will kill their holiday goldfish, when they put those fish in the city's tap water.

The addition of chlorine to the water can not guarantee a consistency in the amount of chlorine throughout an entire water system. At any point along the system, including points in the pipes that feed a home water tap, the amount of chorine in the water could diminish. That would then encourage the growth of bacteria in the pipes.

The toxins from the bacteria can then enter the water supply. Those toxins join the growing number of other chemicals that are already in most tap water. Even in locations that are distant from a big city, a homeowner must continue to worry about possible toxins in the water.

The present-day environment holds a large number of chemicals called hydrocarbons. When a homeowner burns leaves in his or her backyard, hydrocarbons have a chance to combine with any chlorine compounds in the area. The homeowner produces dioxins. Why is that significant?

Dioxins are toxic to the human system. Yet when dioxins become introduced into the environment, then they can concentrate in the soil. Eventually water washes over that soil, and the water carries some dioxins into lakes and streams. Other water with dioxins trickles down into the ground water.

The above example underlines the reason that even those who live at a distance from an urban center need to examine the available tap water filtration systems. A present-day homeowner would be foolish to ignore the potential dangers in the water that comes from the home's tap.

Yet the information on those dangers should not prevent any homeowner from trying to give each resident of the home access to clean, pure, great-tasting water. The availability of water filtration options allows each homeowner to remain confident of success, while he or she is focused on that effort.

Because most of today's homeowners have and use a personal computer, most homeowners have access to the online information about systems for water filtration. Having studied that information, the wise homeowner generally gravitates towards a particular type of filtration system. A majority of homeowners have elected to use activated carbon filters with ion exchange and micron filtration.

Those homeowners have looked closely at the online literature about tap water filtration systems. After perusing that information, those homeowners have decided on the water filtration system that seems to represent the safest choice.
