“Rome was not built in a day”. There has been a tremendous effort on the part of great veterans who have proved their metal and paved the way for technological innovation and yet managed to stand apart from the crowd.

The gadgets, the latest technologies, the innovations that surround us today are the results of hard work of many such tech visionaries who literally have redefined the meaning of technological innovation. . Here we are trying our level best to list some such visionaries or researchers and pay homage.

Making to top slot on our list is the father of chip giant Intel.

The man, Gordon Moore formulated a law to guide the computing power of chips manufactured each year. In 1965, he stated that “number of components on a chip should double almost every two year to increase the computing efficiency twice”. Starting with a small company, who ever wondered that Intel will soon be the synonym for processors and no competitor will ever be able to taste that phenomenal success and uncontested leadership.

The company is still following that basic principle of Moore and is leading the path since years. Now the company is forking into other segments like UMPCs, UMDs or netbooks and is also focusing to develop the compact sized processor namely “Atom”. Despite what company is achieving today, the best can be concluded that without this novelty, Silicon Valley would not have existed.

The duo making next to the list is Sergey Brin and Larry Page, Fathers of Google. Google was not the first search engine to be invented, long before it also existed the search engines. But their accuracy and results were pathetic. Google perhaps came out with the most perfect version of a search engine and entirely changed the definition. What started with search engine business has eventually forked into many segments ranging from Google docs to Google Sky, Gmail to Google Video and many others…list is long and above all, the services offered are free of any charge unlike its previous contenders. Google’s universe is expanding and is defining new spectrum of success in each sector making the competition tougher for others in the same field.

Nothing like this could be imagined if Tim Berners Lee would not have made his part of contribution. His 1989 inventions ranging from the development of World Wide Web Consortium or URL or hyperlinks; all contributions made by this legendary personality. Internet is the baby of this man and what we do today will not have been possible without him and his precious contribution. He led the revolution and made all (including us who all are reading) to make the development a huge success. No doubt advancements and novelties have been added to the traditional idea but with out strong foundation the great standing building is never possible…hats off to this living legend.

The discussion of visionaries is incomplete without mentioning Bill Gates. The Software King and undisputed tech leader for over a decade – offered users the utilities which are till now by far the most widely used. The operating system Windows offered by Microsoft (the company founded by him) was once the synonym for computers. People till many long years were not able to differentiate computer from Windows…for them computer was just Windows.

Till today, many of us who are not surfing, spend most of the time working with Office suite, the other very useful contribution of Microsoft. Many people still are very fond of its Outlook Express that gives you alert every time a new message arrives in your inbox (no matter you are online or offline). The company offered bundle of utilities, Many were accepted and many received rave comments. The company that dominated the tech world is messing up a bit these days. With its unsuccessful and most criticized operating system , Vista the company is somewhat facing hard days but despite of all this unwelcomed discussions, the crux is – Without Windows computers might not have been that popular among common users.

The company that touched more or less every face of technology with pinch of salt and appreciation can not be left un-discussed when milestones are considered. Hewlett- Packard (HP) derived from the last names of Dave Packard and Bill Hewlett, started from a garage and is reigning the tech world surrounding it. The company has a long portfolio for products and services; you name them and they have it. The company is in servers, computers, laptops, printers, multifunctional printers, cameras and yes, after acquiring EDS recently is a global service provider. After riding the down slope for few years, the company is back on top and even has surpassed its competitors.

Coming next to the list is Steve Jobs, the leader for company that has always earned people’s pie for award winning products, Apple. The end users can never forget the two memorable contributions of the company for their use – Apple MACs and iPods, and the latest addition is iPhones. The introduction of MAC as operating system was the booster for company since after 1980s. But after that company is growing in funds as well as in popularity by leaps and bounds.

Then comes Linus Torvalds, the father of Linux, most commonly known synonym for Open Source. No one had ever imagined that software developed as an alternative can create threats for the long established brands in the category. The best free of cost alternative ever developed for costly Windows, the Linux operating system has been in continuous development since 1991, when idealized first time then. Till now it was best considered for servers but now gradually has made a move to desktop PCs and to ultra low cost laptops like Asus Eee PC.

No discussion can ever end without Michael Dell, the owner for Dell. The company is no new to any tech professional. He turned the statistics for end consumers buying PCs by offering customizable needs as per their choice rather than preassembled configurations. At that time, mostly all vendors copied the same but eventually when “retailing” emerged as latest fad, the company nearly brushed with corporate death. Emerged as strong contender from that hard time, company ventured into retailing and is now again in the top slots.

The list is therefore endless however and can go on and on. However , we need to acknowledge and appreciate the constant contribution of such great veterans.
