Milford Sound is a fjord located in the south western corner of New Zealand’s South Island. The area has been voted as the most popular travel destination and celebrated author Rudyard Kipling once said that it is the eighth natural wonder of the world. The area was left untouched by European explorers as they did not believe the narrow entry in to the area hid large bays and because it was difficult to navigate through the fjords.

However, for modern day explorers aka tourists the best way to enjoy the scenic unspoiled beauty of Milford Sound is by boat. Red Boat Cruises operates a cruise through New Zealand’s fjordland starting off from their base at Milford Sound Wharf. Passengers on board can enjoy the scenic views of the areas unadulterated water and the breathtaking mountains that border the path of the ship. Red Boat Cruises also gives its passengers a guided tour of the various geological formations in the area as well as a commentary on the natural history and its geographical information. A wide selection of food is also available on board from snacks and sweets to a buffet lunch, while a well stocked bar can also be found that enables you to enjoy the breathtaking scenery with a glass of fine wine.

Two main travel packages are available for tourists who wish to experience the beauty of Milford Sound by ship. The Encounter Nature Cruise gives you an up-close look at the natural formations of the fjord. While a running commentary on the areas geology, flora and history will be provided. However the best part is sailing below the beautiful waterfalls and approaching the jagged razor edged cliffs. The Milford Deep Cruise enables visitors to take a look at the undersea attractions of the fjord using state of the art viewing facilities.

Located in the Te Anau area, visitors to Milford Sound can op to stay at a Te Anau hotel which also enables them to visit other nearby attractions. These hotels sustain the same standards of hospitality found in many New Zealand hotels.
