Many people travel to Cancun on all inclusive packages and spend the whole vacation in the resort, mostly by the pool or on the private beach recharging their batteries - and that's absolutely fine! However, it would be a shame to travel all that way and not see any of the real Mexico, so we advise you take at least one trip and here are 3 possibilities to choose from:-
Chichen Itza
Some people refer to Chichen Itza (pronounced "Chee Chen Eat-za") as American Egypt due to the ancient Mayan pyramids! This is a large pre-Columbian (Mayan)archaeological site in the Yucatán Peninsula. The main attraction here is the fabulous Temple of Kukulkan, an imposing stepped pyramid. Amazingly at certain times of the year (the Spring and Fall equinox) the shadow cast by the pyramid forms the shape of a plumed serpent! There are many other buildings composed of temples, palaces, stages, markets, baths, and ball courts. This is an excellent site perhaps only surpassed by the pyramids of Egypt.
Tulum
A Pre-Columbian Maya walled city remarkably well preserved. Pronounced "tool-oom", according to historians Tulum was not only a fortified defence against invasion but an important site for worship of the Diving or Descending God. Just 80 miles south of Cancun not only is it the most well preserved archaeological Mayan site but one of the closest to the Riviera Maya. This has got to be one of the best vacation photo opportunities in Mexico with the ruins on top of 40 foot cliffs right on the Caribbean Sea!
Xel-Ha
A massive aquatic park built on the site of an ancient Mayan port village. Pronounced "shell-ha", this is a site devoted to celebrating the biological diversity of the Riviera Maya. Consisting of an enormous open-sea aquarium , various land and water activities, ecological attractions, top-class restaurants, and many more experiences. Think "Discovery Cove" Mexico style!
There are of course many other attractions, sites of interest and activities to enjoy in and around Cancun and I encourage you to sample as many as you can. However as a minimum, please at least visit the above – just think of the pictures you will have to show your friends and family back home if nothing else!
Cancun itself is an amazing vacation spot, but many people on all inclusive Cancun Mexico trips fail to take advantage of the
rich pickings on offer! Mexico has an amzing history and culture and
many of the best sites are only hours away from Cancun. So while
