Why Can't We Be Friends?

Why can't we be friends? This may be the thought that goes through your mind when you ask a fellow gym trainer to spot you and he declines. Let me just offer a common reason why he may have said no, and maybe you'll see the situation in a different light.

For many people, time at the gym is about more than just getting healthy and strong. For those people, time at the gym is some of their only "me" time. It is the time that the guy who spurned you spends AWAY from the troubles of his world. When you asked him for a spot it may have reminded him of the wife he's at the gym to avoid! This can be a great thing, as the gym is a great place to blow off steam, but it can lead some people to be rude.

That, or he's just a jerk. Some people, of course, are just like that. If he seems to be like this perhaps he is just not worth dealing with.

In either case, what you can do in this situation is ask if he needs help with any lifts, and suggest that after that he could spot you! I have found, by experience, that this strategy works very well. Also, it is possible that he is a serious trainer who feels he cannot be disturbed for any reason. If this is the case, try not to take it personally. If all else fails, ask someone else!
