One word of warning though and that is although many Germans in the big cities speak English, it is not generally their second language so you may have a little difficulty in some areas. This is part of the reason why it is a good idea to book your German car rental in advance as at least by doing it that way you can guarantee what vehicle you will be assigned. If you intend on doing a great deal of traveling on your trip then I would strongly urge you to plan ahead as it will save time and any possible inconvenience later. As strange as this may sound it does make sense because you may decide that the places you intend to visit are better serviced by trains and coaches.
For example, can you actually afford to rent a car in Germany for the full period you are there? If you are not familiar with driving on the right hand side of the road, then this may prove a problem if you do not feel confident. Many people actually have difficulty with regards to this so you might as well take note of this before actually booking a car. However, if you are traveling with others you may find one of your companions is quite happy to do the driving which neatly solves a potential problem.
An alternative if there isn't an alternative driver is to consider hiring a professional driver locally for the duration of your trip. It is important to remember that your driver must speak English, well enough to understand your instructions, although not necessarily fluent. Your vacation is supposed to be a stress free, relaxing time so make sure this small detail is not overlooked. There is nothing wrong with making arrangements in advance of your vacation in Germany and possible car rental especially when you consider it will probably save you money.
