If you want to prevent adware from being installed on your computer—or think you may already have it installed—here are a few tips.

Download freeware sparingly. Many adware programs are bundled in “freeware,” or programs available for free download on the Internet.

Install a firewall. If an Adware program tries to access the Internet, the firewall will notify you.

Don’t click “OK.” Plenty of pop-ups on the Internet will install adware on your computer if you click “OK.”

Install current updates. Microsoft Windows and other operating systems aren’t perfect; they all have security flaws that are regularly updated by the manufacturers.

Use a pop-up blocker. Sometimes it’s safest to avoid pop-ups altogether.

Download and update an adware-removal program. Make sure you choose a trusted program; some install adware while claiming to remove it.

If you have adware on your computer, disconnect it from the Internet. While your computer is connected, the adware program can send information about you to a third party.

Scan, restart, and scan again. Some adware programs may try to hide when an adware removal program is activated; to prevent this, scan and restart at least three times.

Contact a professional. If your adware removal program is not effectively removing the malicious software, the problem may be too complex for you to handle alone.

Adware can be a nuisance, but it can also be avoided. So to summarize – some handy tips include: Don’t download freeware from unknown websites, install a pop-up blocker and firewall and keep your Internet browser updated and secure. Taking these simple steps means that you will be able to prevent most adware problems before they start.
