Why Infrequent Security Checks Are Not Enough

Business owners who have some kind of internet presence fall into several different categories when it comes to paying attention to the security of their business.

The first group has nothing more than a firewall and the usual kinds of anti-virus software most people have on their home computers. The second group is a little more advanced – they recognise the threat posed by hackers and when they first started their business they took the time to get someone in to ensure their website and their systems were as secure as they could be. After that they simply carried on with developing their business.

The third group, however, has all the bases covered. Not only did they make sure their system was as invulnerable as possible to begin with, they continued to engage the services of a company who made sure it stayed that way. As a result their security levels are of the highest level, and their clients are safe in the knowledge that their data is safe with this company.

Now there is obviously some cost involved in having a company performing regular security checks on your business, but you need to ask yourself, which group would you rather be in? Either of the first two groups is laying themselves wide open to attack sooner or later.

The second group is starting from a better position, but in reality the hackers will keep trying to find ways to break into a company’s website and gain access to as much information as they can get. If they realise that the security systems that company has in place are the same month in, month out, without any sign of being updated, you can be sure they will be back to get through their defenses once they have found a way in.

Don’t be fooled into thinking if they can’t get in, they won’t be back. Hackers seem to like a challenge, and if they discover that a company is falling down on the job of getting their systems checked and updated regularly, they will exploit it.

The truth is that you only need to miss out on a single patch for your system, or a single update which a reputable internet security firm would be able to advise you about. That could literally be all it takes to create an opening for a hacker to enter by – and if they do you will soon regret the chance you had to close it and keep them out for good.

This is why infrequent security checks simply cannot keep up with the needs of today’s internet based businesses. Anyone who has an online presence – whether it interacts directly with its customers or not – has a responsibility to make sure that business is constantly protected from people who could attack it for any reason at all.

It can sometimes be hard to believe that some people are malicious enough to attack businesses and create havoc simply because they can. The sooner you believe that reality and take steps to combat it, the more secure your business will be.
