Are you tired of having to get repeated filler injections to produce the youthful facial results that you desire? There are permanent alternatives to fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Radiesse which may be an option for you to achieve a more youthful appearance permanently. In certain circumstances, your own fat can be taken from the abdomen or thighs and transferred to the face. As people age, several things happen, among them, atrophy of facial fat and descent of facial muscles.

Where can fat be transferred to?

Fat augmentation can be performed in the lips, to the cheeks, around the eyes, and in the jowl area.

How long does it last?

Fat is a permanent alternative to temporary fillers. While the fat itself is a permanent option, it may take 2 or 3 treatments to get the results that you desire. It is very important not to over transplant an area as removal is often quite difficult.

Can someone else donate fat?

Unfortunately not. The fat is taken from the person who is wishing for the transfer. Almost everyone has enough fat which can be harvested from either the abdomen or the thigh to augment the face.

What are the risks?

There are risks with any procedure. The most common risk is bruising and swelling. This may last for several weeks and is variable. As always, steps can be taken to minimize the risk but it is present. Additional risks are dependent on the location from which the fat is harvested, the location to which the fat is transferred, the medical condition of the patient, and medications (including over the counter dietary supplements) the patient is taking. Consultation with an experienced and trained facial plastic surgeon or plastic surgeon can ensure that you have a full understanding of the risks before undergoing any procedure.

Is the procedure covered by insurance?

Generally fat transfer is not covered by insurance. In certain circumstances if the fat loss is due to trauma or some medical conditions insurance may cover the cost. In these cases, it is best to call your insurance company and ask them in advance.

What type of anesthesia is necessary?

Fat transfer can be performed using only local anesthesia. For patient comfort, more sedating anesthesia can be used but is generally not necessary.
