The Dominican Republic is like that first love; when you part separate ways, you try to convince yourself that it's for the better and that you can still be happy apart, but deep down inside there is that squirming pang that tries convincing you to give it another go; you can't leave, not yet. To the first-timer, you've been warned. Once you visit, you will become enamored.

The most important factor to consider when visiting the Dominican Republic is your safety; as with any foreign surrounding, there are new and unfamiliar precautions to remain aware of. The surest means of abiding by that is to stay in a Dominican Republic all-inclusive resort. They are many and they are amassing.

At the all-inclusive, everything is taken care of, security included. Your food, drinks, and every amenity are conveniently scattered into the resort, and although they are a go-to source of relaxation, beware of the trap that so many inadvertently fall into while on vacation—becoming too enraptured by the luxuries of the sleepy, pampered atmosphere.

Where to Visit

If your hotel is not in Santo Domingo, the country's capital, you should make it a point to visit. Not only does every capillary of Dominican Republic culture feed into the city, but serves as a hub of great historical sites and nightlife.

To the East of Santo Domingo, in Punta Cana, are the country's premier beaches of soft, white sand and palm-lined shores. The North coast, or Amber Coast, also shares a similar, striking coast, and is especially known for its kite and wind surfing.

The country is ideal, not only for soaking in the warm, drowsy heat and the calm, cool breezes, but for bathing in an endless supply of rum, hot salsa dancing, and to just get away.
