Medical Office Software can often make or break your clinical practice, and it is crucial that you know what you are getting when you make the investment of bringing a new software system into your office. Your software needs to be much more than just "office" software for your medical practice. It needs to be medical billing software, electronic medical records software, medical history software, and medical case management software. Your medical office software needs to be able to help you manage your entire practice and the health of your patient base to be effective.

Conversion from a manual system to an automated one can be costly, and so is converting from one software to another. So be sure that you ask, at least, the following questions before investing in a new medical office software system.

1. Is your software easy to learn and use? Any new medical office software that you bring into your practice should make life easier for your providers, nurses, and office staff. You need to find out how simple it is to navigate, how often users need to use the keyboard to enter data vs a simple mouse click, and whether users can keep several windows open simultaneously on their desktop.

2. What training do you provide? How much training is provided before full implementation in your practice, and what kind of ongoing support is available?

3. How long have you been in business? It's always best to work with a company that has been in business long enough to have a generous list of satisfied customers, and to have worked out any bugs in their software.

4. Do you have references we can call? Expect to be able to contact satisfied customers with practices similar to yours.

5. What are your backup procedures? Safety of your data is paramount. Make sure they have various methods of backup to safeguard data no matter what.

6. Is your software web-enabled or web-native? This is important. Web-enabled software has to be installed on your computers and can only be accessed from those computers. You only need an internet connection to access web-native software from any computer. There is a big difference in access for these two types of software.
