As you prepare for a move, there are some tips you can use to make your packing easier and more effective. Because you want to be sure your items are packed with the utmost care, often times you will choose to pack yourselves. However, this can be very time consuming. Allow plenty of time for packing by starting several weeks early.
Start by sorting through items to separate the things you'll be taking with you from the ones you won't. If you run across items you don't use, you'll need to decide whether to put them into storage, sell them, or throw them away.
Before you start to pack, make sure you have all of the packing supplies you might need on hand. Packing supplies you're sure to need include boxes, box tape, bags in miscellaneous sizes, brown wrapping paper, labels, markers, and anything else that will help your packing go more smoothly. You can go to a local general store and pick up most of your packing items. As soon as you know you're going to be moving, start saving boxes as well as asking friends and family to save any they come across. Grocery stores are also a steady supply of good, sturdy boxes.
Start by packing the items you aren't going to be using. Make sure that you do not pack any items that you will need on a daily basis. If you think that you are going to be using certain items, don't pack them until the very last. Label the contents on each box after it is packed. Sometimes, just marking the room the box is destined for is enough. If you have delicate items that could be easily broken, make sure to mark their boxes as fragile. You can keep your fragile items from being broken during the move by wrapping them in newspaper, bubble wrap, or even clothes. When you unpack be sure to carefully unwrap any item that is breakable. Some items that are shaped awkwardly may need to be moved by themselves because they will not fit in any boxes. Such items include floor lamps, mops, and brooms.
Some of the larger furniture may need to be disassembled in order to move it carefully. Be sure that any hardware, like screws and bolts, are kept together to ensure a smooth reassembly. With large furniture, wrap the legs. Doing this will prevent scratches and other damage. You can use a blanket or another type of covering in order to protect table tops. You don't want to risk damaging your furniture during the move. Move everything slowly and with extreme care.
