It has been argued that the onset and arrival of Laminate flooring represents one of the most important and exciting developments in the flooring business within the past 25 years. That having been said, what exactly is Laminate Flooring?
Developed in Sweden in the early nineteen eighties, Laminate flooring as we know it today was originally developed as a by product or additional use of high pressure melamine laminate.
Comprised from a base of several layers of paper which have been impregnated with several special resins and compressed under conditions of high pressure into a highly durable resistant composite, Laminate Flooring gets it design aspects from whichever paper was used in its composition
So this having been said, what about Flooring in general?
It is almost bizarre that we take for granted so very completely one of the most important aspects of any building that we come into and that is the part that we walk over every day that is to say the floor, and why would we not, it is permanently under our feet? It is the very nature of the fact that it is permanently under our feet that disguises its importance.
Before we go much further into our discussion of flooring perhaps it might be an idea to cover the basics of what it is exactly we are talking about.
In architecture, the floor is generally the lower horizontal surface of a room, and/or the supporting structure underneath it. The concept of a floor has evolved somewhat over centuries and has gone from what initially started out as a very basic part of basic construction to now becoming almost as complicated as you could imagine. More often than not an associate term in common usage with the word floor is the word flooring and this refers to any permanent covering that is laid on top of the basic structure and in particular would flooring.
Floor covering is the term to generically describe any finished material or type of finish applied over a floor structure to provide a walking surface. The sort of materials found in floor covering or coverings tend to consist of carpets rugs and what is more often termed resilient flooring such as linoleum or vinyl flooring The materials found to actually comprise the floor structure itself usually consist of wood, ceramic tile, stone, terrazzo or various sorts of chemical floor coatings.
The choice of either what sort of floor is used or the type of floor covering used can be motivated by a number of various factors such as cost (usually the most important factor but not necessarily), endurance, noise insulation, comfort and the amount of effort required in cleaning and maintenance. It is also to be remembered or certainly taken into consideration that there are certain conditions that certain types of floors are not to be installed such as where the floor is below ground level and moisture levels might be important and in these instances laminate or hardwood floors should be avoided. However as in all situations in life there is always the odd exception to the rule.
