From the Herald News:

Fourth-grade students in Michael Schuelke's class at Freedom Elementary School may not travel to Japan anytime soon. But if they ever do decide to go, they will be well-researched travelers.
Each student is completing a travel brochure to the country.
The brochures must highlight visits to at least two of Japan's main islands and include a three to five-day itinerary for someone to follow during their visit.

Each brochure also includes a hand-drawn map of Japan with labels and the route of travel, main regions, top five cities by size, a map legend and three pictures.

Information in the brochure also included facts about the capitol, population, languages spoken, currency, imports and exports, national symbols and main holidays. Each student has also created a name and slogan for their travel companies. Discount Asia Travel for example, with fun and creative slogans.

Schuelke got the idea to teach this subject from his Asia travel experience.

In the fall of 2005, Schuelke toured Japan for three weeks as one of 200 educators from the United States selected to attend through the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program. The program educates American educators on international and Japanese education systems.

Through their research, the students are being required to compare characteristics of culture as reflected in language, literature, the arts, traditions and institutions, Schuelke said.

Planning a trip to Japan is not always affordable, however. For discount tickets Tokyo Japan, Thailand, Philippines, and the rest of Asia subcontinent, visit http://gatewaylax.com.
