5 things to do – gaining safety by a horse (Part one).

This article is about 5 things to do, to optimize your safety along the animal.

Every year, I am sad to see, both adults and children get hurt by a horse. This gave me the idea for this short article. Teach this few principles to your kids, if they are alone with the animal.

A) Do always, both adults and kids wear proper safe clothing, and use safe equipment of best quality. Remember to wear boots or hard-toed shoes to protect your feet, if you are stepped on. A lot of injuries is actually happening on the ground, so always wear a helmet, both riding or not.

B) Do always calm the horse, when approaching the animal. Like a car, a horse has several blind angles and would not like to be surprised. Always speak to the horse in a calm tone, when approaching the horse or working the horse. In this way, it always acknowledges your presence.

C) The best way to approach a horse is not by front or rear. Always approach the hose by its shoulder or the side. Do never stand still directly in front of or behind a horse. It could be fatal.

D) A good advice is to always make sure, that the horse knows – where you are. Talk to the horse or keep a finger or a hand on it all the time. That makes the horse calm and safe. When you walk the horse, go at least 15 feet or so away from the horses body, so it cant kick you. If you are using a latter, remember to hold one hand at his rump all the time. In this case, he will stay aware – that you are still present.

E) Never use or wrap any equipment that is not attached to the horse around the horse or around your self. This includes lunge lines, and ropes.
