Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is normally an outpatient procedure required for doctors to enable them to look inside the lower large intestine, referred to as the colon. This procedure is commonly used for patients with bowel disorders, and is a fairly simple procedure. It can evaluate bowel disorders, identify rectal bleeding, and benign polyp growths. They are also performed to screen people over 50 years of age for rectal cancer.

The physician can use this procedure to accurately diagnose irritable bowel syndrome and includes testing for patients with an irritable bowel disease. The test can identify if the patient has ulcerative colitis or Crohn' disease, and the physician may take samples for further testing, and confirmation of the disease. Patients who have been diagnosed with an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are screening on a periodic time frame.

The physician uses a colonoscope during the procedure, which is a long, flexible instrument. It is about one half inch in diameter and is used for the physician to view the lining of the colon.
