The World Cup in Germany this June will bring a tourist windfall for the host cities as more then 3 million visitors from around the globe descend on the venues for the world largest sporting event. Germany's diverse main cities have much to offer and many are popular short break destinations in their own right. With the spotlight on the 12 host cities this summer, the chance for the cities to showcase themselves to the world is proving a popular promotional tool.

As one of the main host cities, Hamburg is well prepared for the swarm of tourists that is set to set to arrive this summer. Hamburg will host 5 matches in total including one of the quarter finals and the focus of the world will be on the city this June. Hamburg, though, is well used to the spotlight. As One of Germany's most visited cities, Hamburg is used to catering for large volumes of tourists. That said, the popularity of the World Cup will make it difficult to find any accommodation this June. Some of the major hotel websites may still have some availability and the Hamburg tourist site is an informative and useful resource with up to date information on availability of rooms across the city.

Hamburg is a major tourist draw in Germany. Sitting on the estuary of the Elbe and Alster Rivers the city has an enviable outlook and with a history dating back some 1,200 years Hamburg has an attractive cultural and historical air. Public transport in the city is reasonably priced and efficient. There are a number of sightseeing tours covering the main areas of interest and these are generally well run and not overpriced. The city's transport system will be strained during the World Cup and if freedom of movement is a priority, there are many car hire options in and around the city.

If you are following your team at the World Cup this year and covering a lot of German ground as a result, car rental may well be a good option. Although the public transport in Germany is possibly the best in Europe, an additional 3-4 million visitors may well take its toll on the railways and airports this summer. The German road network is extensive and capable of large volumes so travelling between the twelve host cities may well be more relaxed and efficient by road.
