Medical insurance costs are a hot topic these days. Presidential candidates are interviewed on their plans for controlling rising health insurance costs and the possibility of a national health insurance program. The media reminds us of lower prescription costs in Mexico and Canada. Companies trying to reduce expenses are requiring employees to contribute more to the premium costs or offering incentives to employees who opt-out of the company plans. Strikes have been called over health insurance contributions. These are just a few reasons more people are looking into individual insurance plans.

Medical insurance plans are tiered to meet a variety of needs. The days of one size fits all in the insurance field are a thing of the past. There are policies that cover everything from soup to nuts so to speak or those covering only the bare bones. You can purchase a policy that includes health club memberships, minimal drug costs and allows you to use any doctor or hospital with a worry or you can choose a policy that provides in hospital coverage only. The choice is yours and costs can vary greatly.

Before you shop for an insurance plan, consider carefully your health care requirements. The following questions will help guide you to the type of plan best for you. Do you see a doctor regularly? Are you taking any maintenance medications or have chronic conditions requiring monitoring? Do you exercise regularly, watch your diet and generally take care of yourself? Would you benefit from a plan offering mail order prescriptions at reduced costs?

Someone who rarely see a doctor or is hospitalized would benefit from a basic plan covering in hospital care only. While someone who is constantly running to the doctors and taking daily medications would require a most inclusive plan. Your risk aversion is also a factor in determining your insurance requirements. If you live in fear of a terminal or serious illness which may cause financial hardship, you could require a higher level of insurance than you actually need.

Carefully consider your current needs, family history and risk level when shopping for health insurance. Don't allow yourself to be pressured into a policy which exceeds your requirements or opting out of the company policy before you're ready. An informed consumer can save both time and money when shopping for any product or service; especially health insurance.
