Children are getting on average two hours less than the recommended amount of sleep each night leading to mood swings, behavioural problems such as hyperactivity and cognitive problems that impact on their ability to learn in school, research by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) has found.
According to the NSF’s Poll Task Force toddlers and pre-schoolers are worst affected recording just 11.7 hours and 10.4 hours of sleep a night respectively, well below the 12-14 hours and 11-13 hours recommended for age each group. The study suggests that parents encourage a regular bedtime routine which negates the sense of ‘missing out’ – a feeling that Children’s Fun Beds is determined to stamp out.
The online department store specialising in novelty theme beds for children aims to put the fun back into bedtime with its collection of racing car, pirate ship and princess house beds designed to alleviate bedtime resistance and anxiety around sleeping. The beds, which are available in a range of sizes from junior toddler to adult, provide children with a made-to-measure space that offers a sense of security and comfort during the difficult transition period to `grown-up bed`.

Sourced from UK and European furniture suppliers the beds range from the exciting Digger Cabin Bed, with its colourful theme play tent providing a novel play area or useful storage space under the top bunk, to hand-crafted wooden frames built from solid Canadian timbers grown in sustainable forests and finished with antique wax. The detailed theme carvings offer both individuality and style, whilst the opportunity to personalise many of the beds free of charge by having the child’s name carved into the frame promotes positive sleep practices by ensuring a dedicated place for rest.
For Jason Lewis, director of Children’s Fun Beds, the importance of matching children to their beds has never been higher. “With most children spending over 40 per cent of their childhood asleep it is crucial to provide children with a bed in which they feel safe, secure and happy” he said.

“Sleep issues are often more difficult to deal with than other family problems and one child’s sleep problem can affect not only the parents, but siblings, so that the whole family is up in the middle of the night".
