When you are trying to lose weight, one of the smartest things you can do and the easiest steps you can take is to keep a food diary. A food diary is just like what it sounds - a notebook in which you record your daily food consumption. You keep track of a number of things in your food diary or you can keep it simple so that it achieves its objective of trying to help you stick to your weight loss plan.

There are a number of things or information that you can record in your food diary. For a start, just consider listing your daily menu. This will help you to actually see what you eat on any given day and study the patterns of unhealthy eating habits that you’ve never considered before. Some people will like to record their calories, protein, fiber, fat, and other nutrient consumption.

Food portion and size may also be recorded. If you truly want to keep a complete and informative diary, you can also list the reasons you are eating other than hunger, the cravings you experience, and your feelings about your diet on any given day. It’s your diary, so do anything you want to it or include whatever is useful for you.

When you start a food diary, bear in mind that you don’t have to keep a traditional journal by the bed under lock and key. Utilize whatever kind of recording and writing tools you like and possess. For example, some people find that the traditional journal or just a plain notebook works fine for them. You can also keep a food diary on your computer. Simply open up a word processing program and keep the icon on your desktop. Others like to use Excel or other data entry programs, which will come in handy when it comes to totaling up the numbers at the end of the day. Alternatively, you can also keep your food diary on a laptop or palm pilot, or slip a notebook in your bag - whatever that suits your lifestyle best.

Remember to update your food diary daily and review them at the end of the week to track your progress. You may wish to pay particular attention to information that shows up in your diary about you hitting a certain weight loss goals or you gaining weight as this will help you look for causes for this variance. Show your diary to the professionals to ensure that you are healthy as well. Food diary works great for many people, so you should consider starting one today to make your weight loss dream possible.
