Fires have been rising in popularity here in the UK. This is clear if you've walked into any newly fitted pubs in recent months, where fires are seen as being central to providing the right, cosy atmosphere. It's also obvious that they are appearing in many homes.

To many, this resurgence may seem a little unusual. After all, isn't the idea of heating a room in your home with a fire rather old fashioned? Why would anyone choose to go down this route when they could simply make use of central heating.

One aspect of real importance here is that many people are coming to the conclusion that they prefer the appearance of a fire. Although radiators may be efficient, few would claim that they are the sort of item that will impress guests.

In fact, it would not be outrageous to suggest that it would be rare to find someone who is actually proud of their radiators. The opposite is true of fires - people enjoy having them on and making them central to their rooms.

Looking at the latest electric fire designs, it's clear that many have a real modern, contemporary feel. They make use of a sleek, minimalist design, with clean lines and simple colour contrasts.

As a result, they are increasingly being seen as a stylish accessory for any room. In this context, it's much easier to see why more and more people are choosing to heat with an electric fire.

Part of this transformation in attitude has undoubtedly been caused by their increasing use in fashionable settings, such as upmarket restaurants. Inset fires and those that are built into holes in an existing wall look impressive and are obviously appealing to buyers.

It also helps that they are a flexible option - much more so than alternative fuel sources. Since they don't need to make use of an existing chimney or flue, they can be used in just about any home.

This is particularly good news for those people who own relatively new properties, where there is unlikely to be an existing fireplace available.

It's clear that there are numerous reasons why people look to heat with an electric fire. As we've discussed, some of those reasons are of a practical nature but many are also about the stylish side of life.

An electric fire is a way of heating a room, but don't forget that it can also be a relatively inexpensive home improvement accessory.
