The capital of Western Australia, the wonderfully diverse Perth offers a bouncing nightlife, sun drenched beaches, maritime adventures and much more. It's the ideal holiday destination for any age, no matter what you're into. If you can bear the long flight – 12 hours from the UK to Singapore, then 5 more hours onward to Perth – you'll find a beautiful city and a fantastic holiday waiting to greet you.

Perth has one of the best climates in Australia, with temperatures ranging from 18 to 29 degrees C in the summer, and 8 to 18 in the winter. The Australian summer coincides with the winter in the UK (December to February) so it's an ideal place to visit if you want to escape the winter blues. Conversely, the mild winters in Perth make it a nice place to visit during the UK summertime if baking heat isn't your thing.

There is plenty to see and do in and around Perth, as the region combines city, coast and country. The city itself is the place to go for retail therapy; there are dozens of outlet stores and local craft shops interspersed with restaurants and shops offering native cuisine and wines from the many vineyards in the country. The Swan River travels through the heart of the city, providing riparian opportunities for wannabe sailors, canoeists and kite-surfers.

Along the coast there are yet more aquatic activities to take part in, such as fishing, surfing, and even swimming with dolphins and other sea life in their natural environment. After drying off you can find out more about your swimming buddies in one of the marine museums and discovery centres.

Heading inland is recommended if you're a cycling enthusiast – bikes are available for hire in several places, and the Peel region is home to the famous Munda Biddi bike trail. History fans will enjoy a visit to the Avon Valley and the various museums, galleries and historic buildings.

Accommodation in Perth is plentiful; campsites, hostels and farmhouses sit happily alongside luxury hotels, so anyone can find somewhere to stay which suits their budget. A room in a 4 star hotel close to the centre of Perth could set you back an average of just £65, compared to around £40 for a deluxe chalet on a campsite very close to Perth's neighbouring city Fremantle.

Perth flights are available from all major UK airports. Springtime in the UK is perhaps the best time to book cheap flights to Perth or other parts of Australia. Use an online cheap flights finder to get the best deals.
