The first day of Diwali festival is celebrated as Dhanteras. It falls on the 13th day of the Krishna Paksha in the Kartik month. According to legendary, God Dhanvantri appeared on this day after the Gods and the Demons churned the milk in the ocean. Therefore, Dhanteras is regarded as an auspicious occasion to buy gold, silver or any new items.
The second day after the Dhanteras celebration is Narak Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali which falls on the 14th day. This day marks the victory of the good over the evil. On this day, according to mythological legendary, Lord Krishna killed Narakasura for the well-being of the people. On this day, Hindus get up early in the morning, massage their body with oil and then take bath. In the evening, special prayers are done and also offer sweets to Goddess Laxmi.
The third day is celebrated as Laxmi Puja. It is a day of praise to Goddess Laxmi, the mother of entire Universe and also the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity. This day is special to all businessmen as it is the beginning of a New Year. On this day, they start new account books after paying prayers and offerings to Goddess Laxmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Lord Ganesha, the lord of an auspicious beginning. On this day, people carry out Laxmi Ganesh Puja prayers, offerings, devotional songs and chant mantras. People seek blessings from Goddess Laxmi on this day and wish wealth and prosperity in the coming year.
The fourth day of the Diwali festival is celebrated as Govardhan Puja. As per Vishnu Puran, the villagers used to worship Lord Indra. So, he convinced them to worship the nature and to stop worshipping Lord Indra and concentrate only on cattle protection and farming. This angered Lord Indra and flooded the whole village. To save them, Lord Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan. So, on this day, people worship Lord Krishna and light lamps to mark the jubilation.
The fifth but the last day is celebrated as Bhai Dooj. This is the special day for all the brothers and sisters. They meet each other on this day to express love and affection for each other. Sister applies tilak or teeka on the forehead of her brother and performs aarti on him, wishing for his long, successful and happy life. In return, the brother blesses her and offers sweets and gifts to her.
