There are many treatments for anxiety and depression, and it is important that any treatment is based on the victim’s individual circumstances. Having said this, there are some broad categories under which treatment may be classified.

Many modern medications for depression, such as SSRI’s, or Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors, attempt to correct a chemical imbalance suffered by victims of anxiety and depression. Modern research has found that in instances of anxiety and depression, there are often changes in the chemical balance within the brain. These chemicals, such as serotonin and dopamine, are responsible for the conduction of the neurological messages transmitted by the brain. It is the receptors of these messages that can have a direct influence on mood.

The use of cognitive and psychological therapies have become increasingly more popular. These strategies are designed to influence the sufferer’s thought processes, behavior, and their response to external stimuli.

Another strategy being used more often is teaching people how to cope. It is widely accepted that stress is a part of normal life, and teaching victims to cope with stress in a more positive manner can help with anxiety and depression.

Alternative treatments and therapies have also been gaining in popularity. Herbal remedies such as St John's Wort are commonly recommended for mild depression. Sufferers have also reported success with other natural remedies and treatments, such as hypnotherapy and acupuncture.

Anxiety and depression are difficult to quantify and understand by those that do not have a familiarity with the symptoms and causes. They can be perceived as an irrational and unrealistic reaction, but to the sufferer, the reality is tangible and causes very real challenges. Ironically, dismissal of this very real condition by those close to a sufferer, will ultimately result in the breakdown of everyday interactions with others.

For most victims of anxiety and depression, treatment is effective but relies totally on the sufferer’s willingness to seek help. The support and understanding of family and friends, together with appropriate medical or other treatment, creates the foundation for dealing with what can be an extremely debilitating condition.
