Hernia is a health problem that can be classified in three different categories. The first of the categories is the inguinal or in the groin hernia. The second one is umbilical hernia and the third one is the incisional hernia or at the site of a previous operation. Hernia is a problem that can be seen in both men and women. Most of the patients chose surgery for their help. This way of treating hernia is very common between its patients. Beside this possibility some people chose laparoscopic approach to hernia repair in order to reduce the pain and the duration of recovery.

When an organ or tissue abnormally protrudes out of the body cavity, it's called a hernia. The most common hernias, by far, develop in the abdomen. In this case a weakness in the abdominal wall turns into a centralized hole, through which an organ or tissue will protrude. Hernias are often times compared to the failure of the tire, where a split in the sidewall allows the inner tube to protrude through to the outside. In that example the inner tube of the tire is like the organ that breaks outwards through the opening in the sidewall. It is this pressure outwards, and the limit of restraint inwards that allows the bulge to develop.

Many men with an inguinal hernia, which is the most common type of hernia, occurring near the groin, often have very few or even no symptoms. In these cases the men and their doctors sometimes delay hernia repair surgery until symptoms of pain or severe discomfort appear. Little is known of the natural course of untreated inguinal hernia as there has been no critical testing of whether delaying surgery and of "watchful waiting" is actually a valid option. Surgical repair, while it is generally safe and effective, still carries the possibility of long-term risks of the hernia recurring, and of continued pain and discomfort.

There are two more levels of hernia. The second type of hernia is incarcerated hernia. In these cases the intestines bulge and become trapped. This type of hernia may lead to gangrene if the hernia gets strangulated (if the blood supply to the incarcerated hernia is shut off). Strangulated hernia represents the third level of hernia. Incarcerated and strangulated hernias need surgical interventions. These are considered medical emergencies and need to be corrected in time. That is why doctors recommend a surgical intervention in the first phase, even though reducible hernia causes no pain to the patient. Hernia is a problem that can be treated.

Irreducible hernia, just as its name suggests, can not be pushed back. This usually means that an old hernia is transforming, and complications can appear. It can easily lead to strangulation of the tissue. It also has some other different symptoms like vomiting. Strangulated hernia, a form that is more dangerous, as mentioned before strangulates an organ or tissue and it cuts its blood supply. This type of hernia can also present vomiting symptoms and the strangulated area is always painful.

Hernia occurs when the umbilical ring fails to close properly, causing the belly button to swell. The swelling of the belly button induces babies a state of local discomfort and sometimes a small degree of soreness. In some cases, umbilical hernia can be accentuated by the babies’ movement and straining. The disorder doesn’t generate any other symptoms and it involves no risk of complication. Although umbilical hernia may sound and look serious, the disorder is in fact a very mild physiological affection.
