Athelete' foot is a very common fungal infection that is caused by mold-like fungi called dermatophytes. This infection affects a wide spectrum of the population. It usually affects the feet and it covers the top layer of the skin. As a result of this infection, the basal layer of the skin produces more skin cells than usual. When these cells push to the surface, the skin becomes thick and scaly.

Athlete's foot or tinea pedis is a very contagious infection affecting mostly people with very limited immunity to the fungus. It grows best in warm, moist areas, such as the area between the toes. When a person comes into contact with areas where the fungus is found, like wet floors, infected socks and shoes, the person can become infected. Since the fungus is found in so many places, it is almost impossible to avoid contact. Pets can also be a source of fungal infections.

An infected person can have the following signs and symptoms:

1. An itchy, stinging and burning area between the toes

2. Burning and reddish soles of your feet

3. Blisters

4. Itchy skin that is continually peeling off and cracking

5. The bottom and sides of the feet are excessively dry

Treatment involves the use of topical and oral antifungal medications. The mode of action includes the inhibition of the biosynthesis of ergosterol which is an essential component of the fungal cell membrane.

Treatment of the infection very much depends on the individual and to his degree of commitment in combating the infection. In some people, tinea infections may disappear spontaneously but in many others, they can persist for years. In treating fungal infection, you must ensure that you continue with the medication for an extra week or ten days after the infection has subsided or the skin become smooth. This is to ensure that the deep-rooted portion of the fungus is totally wiped out.

Personal hygiene is required to prevent reinfection. Where possible, spend more time barefoot so that your feet is aired at most times and the feet kept dry.

Change your socks daily and make sure that socks material is that of wool or cotton or material that will prevent moisture from affecting your feet.

Always air your shoes to ensure dryness and regularly alternate between shoes.

When you are in public places especially in pools, fitness centers, protect your feet by always wearing sandals or shoes to avoid fungal infection.
