Maybe you can relate to a scene that was recently relevant to me. I went out to my local electronics retailer and bought a fantastic new Plasma TV screen. I loaded it in the back of my car and looked forward to its shiny new presence in my home.
When I got it home I took it out of the box and all of its packaging. I also unwrapped the free stand that came with it and set the whole thing up in the corner of my living room. I then stepped back to enjoy the look of my new purchase.
Unfortunately, it looked absolutely awful. Although the television was stylish and had a great picture quality, the stand that came with it was cheap and seemed to have been constructed from a combination of plastic and MDF.
It was at this point that I realised why stores give these TV cabinets away for free - it's because it must cost them almost nothing to manufacture them.
Faced with this rather ugly piece of furniture, I decided to see if I could find something better. I wanted a TV stand that would be strong enough to hold the television set, but would also look stylish.
This seemed like a fairly simple request. It didn't seem as though I was looking to purchase anything particularly outrageous.
As I wandered round the shops and looked at a number of websites, I realised that my request must have been something out of the ordinary. It soon became clear that most retailers specialise in selling budget television stands, while I was looking for something of real quality.
I didn't want an item of furniture was mass produced. If it was owned by another dozen people in the street where I lived then it wasn't something that I'd want in my living room.
Tracking down something that was individual, strong and had a real contemporary design wasn't easy but I did eventually find a manufacturer making cabinets that met my requirements.
A company called Spectral seem to specialise purely in quality TV stands. Although they're not cheap, they are clearly built to a high standard.
I'm now the proud owner of a Spectral TV stand and it looks fantastic. Almost as great as my television set!
